Canoe & Kayak Events

Postby senordante on Mon Feb 04, 2008 5:40 pm

I would love to start doing more of these but not with outiftters.

So some questions:

First - who owns their own canoe or kayaks?

Next - does anyone have thoughts on how shuttles could be handled? One idea I had would be to have participants drive themselves to the put in. We would stage a van put out. After put out one person would stay to guard equipment while the rest return to get their vehicles in the van.

My REI dividend has an inflatable kayak written all over it and it should be coming home to papa very soon:)

PM me and we can discuss a few events!

Does any one have access to or know where I could rent a canoe/kayak trailer?

I'm totally on the lookout for a kayak, but won't buy a new one unless that REI dividend will be enough to pay for one..LOL.

Gearlist and Shuttle Ideas

Postby gunghonia on Fri Feb 15, 2008 5:11 am

I have both a canoe and a whitewater kayak and would love to do more whitewater events on tamer sorts of rivers where I can perfect my roll.

I know you said you didn't want to use outfitters - Offhand, I don't know of anyplace that'll rent canoe/kayak trailers, BUT there are lots of outfitters who'll shuttle people with their own gear for a minimal cost.

River Right

Postby vcarter on Fri Feb 22, 2008 3:53 pm

Hey Dante...don't fall over...yes, Vanessa is getting into the 21st century...is that what we're in? :)

River Right is an Outfitter that will pick you up even if you have your own gear...off the Cartecay, which is a great river to navigate yourself. They charge a $10 portage charge, or something like that.

Most Outfitters will do the same...I can't remember which Outfitter we use for the Chestatee, but that's another good easy river. Steven would know...

OK - I'm going to put together an event for those of us with our own equipment. Probably late April time frame.

I'm in California for work, right now, but I'm hoping to get a boat (kayak) this summer. I'd really like to participate with some folks who know what they're doing. I have this weird aversion to water inhalation. 8)

My buddy, who took me on my first 'yak trip, learned the hard way. He bought a used boat, put in on Section II of the Chattooga, and started paddling. He popped his skirt and swam 13 times that day.

I don't have that kind of "courage".

Whitewater Kayak Lessons

Postby Hilke on Tue Mar 11, 2008 10:06 am

Anyone interested in learning to Whitewater Kayak NOT flatwater. Class II + rapids.
I've looked around a bit and the Nantahala Outdoor Center has an all day Whitewater Kayak Sampler where they provide the equipment & lessons.

We bought a canoe last year, took it to the Chestatee river and paid the 10$ fee. It was a good time except the river was low..... Should be better this year. Can't wait to go again when it warms up.

Can't wait!
