Cumberland Island Backpacking-2/27/2009

Postby pjschubert on Fri Feb 20, 2009 2:29 pm

Hi everyone,

If you are signed up for the Cumberland Island trip next Fri, Feb. 27th thru March 2nd, please update Chris and I on your travel plans. We've heard only from a couple of you, but would like to make sure everyone gets down there on time.

Also, if you would like to find someone to ride/drive with, we could match you up with another member (16 of us) so you won't have to travel that distance alone.

Chris and I are heading down Thurs. night and staying at the Cumberland Island Inn
http://www.cumberlandislandinn.com/cumberlandinn.html. We stayed there last year, it's clean and comfortable with a continental breakfast in the AM. It's about a mile down the street from the Ferry dock.

We are so looking forward to this trip. Please let us know if you have any questions/concerns. Or if you need help planning for the 4 days we'll be out there.

Thanks

I'm also driving down on Thursday night with my friend Lizz, Scott and possibly Geri (I think). We've also got a room at the Cumberland Inn.

I'm planning on heading down Fri. morning. I can haul two bodies. I may head back Sun. morning if I don't achieve enough this week on my lessons. So the bodies that ride with me may need to ride back with another.

Chris do you have room on your shoulders to harness my pack? I love to backpack, but dislike carrying the heavy loads which it requires!! It would make my trip so much more enjoyable, and I would sincerely appreciate it.

Thanks

Hey! I'm planning to drive down earlier on Thursday, probably leaving around 10 or 11, and staying at the Inn. If anyone else can leave that early or wants to share a room, let me know!

OK, I ended up making a reservation at the Cumberland Kings Bay Lodge because it was a little cheaper for just one person! It's about 4 miles down from the ferry. I'm planning to be there mid-afternoon Thursday, so if anyone wants to hang out, give me a call, 770-312-9181!

Thanks everyone for updating us on travel plans and hotel arrangements.

Here's some quick updates on those who have emailed and have not been on the forum.

- Trey and Geri have canceled out on the trip - We'll miss you guys!
- Jon Miner is driving down late Thurs. night, spending night in Savannah and then finishing out travel on Friday morning.
- Charlie and Lucy were just moved over to the attendee list. (Need to know travel plans)
- Pam is also joining us. (Need to know travel plans)
- Chris and I have a hotel room at the Cumberland Island Inn. Tracey and Jack are splitting the room with us.

Please feel free to get with each other on making arrangements for hotel rooms and informal carpooling if you still need to do so. For those just moved up to the trip, please read through the replies, there might be someone you can make arrangement with.

Hi --This is Charlie Cottingham, about 7:20 AM Thursday. My cellphone number is 864-710-8278 in case any of you need to contact me this weekend.

Laura Judy and I are planning to carpool down to St. Marys together this afternoon in my dark green Honda Civic. We'll hook up at noon today in the rear parking lot of the high-rise "Holiday Inn Atlanta South" at the Jonesboro Exit of I-75 (Exit #235). If any others of you wish to meet us there to caravan, etc., feel free to -- it's proven to be a secure place on the south side to leave a spare car, with quick access onto and off I-75.

Laura and I have booked private rooms for tonight at the Cumberland Kings Bay Lodge, about a mile north of the Cumberland I. Inn & Suites, on GA 40 Spur (Charlie Smith Hwy) and expect to check in there about 5 PM. If we don't see y'all this evening, we'll meet you as planned at the Cumb. I. mainland Visitor Center (end of GA-40) at 8:15 tomorrow morning.

Have a safe and fun trip!

CUMBERLAND ISLAND/ ST. MARYS GRAPHICAL HOUR-BY-HOUR FORECAST

In case any of you are interested, here's a link to the U. S. Weather Service's graphical hour-by-hour weather forecast for the St. Marys/ Cumberland Island area this weekend:

http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?w0=t&w1=td&w2=wc&w3=sfcwind&w4=sky&w5=pop&w6=rh&w7=thunder&w8=rain&w9=snow&w10=fzg&w11=sleet&AheadHour=48&FcstType=graphical&textField1=30.75900&textField2=-81.57710&site=all&unit=0&BackDay.x=61&BackDay.y=10

Note that Sat night thru Sunday it's expected to be a bit stormy, but total rain perhaps only about 0.3 inch. On Saturday there'll be strong winds & gusts from the south, so that's probably not a good day to be taking long hikes southward, esp. along the beach. It'll be much colder Sun night (high 30s).

Below is the Weather Svc.'s summary of the forecast from now thru Monday night:

Today: Partly sunny, with a high near 70. East wind between 5 and 14 mph.

Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around 49. Southeast wind between 3 and 8 mph.

Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 74. Light wind becoming south between 10 and 13 mph.

Friday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 54. South wind between 5 and 8 mph.

Saturday: Partly sunny, with a high near 79. Breezy, with a south wind between 7 and 17 mph, with gusts as high as 32 mph.

Saturday Night: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm. Mostly cloudy and breezy, with a low around 52. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Sunday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 1pm, then a slight chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 62. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Sunday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 38.

Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 60.

Monday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 37.
